About the College:
The College was established
on 16th July 1946 as the College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam situated at
Kakinada. It was later named as the Government College of Engineering,
Kakinada. After being initially affiliated to the University of Madras and
later to the Andhra University, it became a constituent College of the
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University at the time of its formation on
2nd October 1972.
The Principal is the administrative and the academic Head of the College. He
is assisted by the Vice-Principal and the College Academic Committee in
academic matters and the Deputy Registrar and the office staff in
administrative matters. The day-to-day activities of the college are carried
out by budgetary allocation from the University funds.
The Campus is spread over a sprawling area of about 110 acres. The college
provides hostel accommodation for about 250 boys and 250 girls. Other
amenities on the campus include Bank, Post-Office, dispensary, guesthouse,
and play fields. College has a good library with about 40,000 volumes. The
college also subscribes to a good number of national and international
journals.
The Research and Development activity in the College got a boost with the
procurement of modern and sophisticated equipment under MHRD and AICTE
schemes. A few Ph.D theses were completed in addition to a number of
M.Tech. theses. A few funded and sponsored research schemes have been in
progress. Members of the teaching faculty authored a good number of research
papers, research reports and textbooks during the last few years.
Several departments in the college have conducted number of summer schools,
seminars, workshops, symposia, and conferences, a good number of them during
the golden year of the college.
The Industrial Consultany Unit offers testing services and expertise for
various establishments belonging to the public and private sectors. With a
few power projects coming up in the Private Sectors in and around Kakinada,
a lot of Geotechnical investigation activity has been undertaken by the
Civil Engineering Department.
The college offers Four Year B.Tech regular programmes in the disciplines of
Civil Engineering (CE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical and
Electronics Engineering (EEE), Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE),
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), The admission to these courses is
based on EAMCET. The college further offers four-year B.Tech part-time
programs in CE, ECE, EEE and ME. The admission is based on ECET.
The college offers M.Tech courses in the following specialization's:
Civil Engineering : Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering
Mechanical Engineering : Machine Design
Electrical Engineering : Power Systems (High Voltage)
Electronics & Communications Engineering : Instrumentation & Controls
Computer Science & Engineering : Computer Science
The intake for these courses is on the basis of GATE Examination for
nonsponsored and entrance test conducted by the University for sponsored
candidates.
The College offers self-supporting P.G. course in MCA. The admission is
based on MCACET. There is a 5-Semester Part-Time PG for M.Tech(CS) & M.Tech(Structures) for CSE and CIVIL departments respectively. In addition, 6-Semester Part-Time programme (M.Tech) with specialisation in Geotechnical Engineering is also offered. The admission in all the Part-Time courses is based on a test conducted by the University.
The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee grandly in 1996. With the help of
funds raised through the contributions from the Alumni, a Golden Jubilee
block has been constructed on the campus mainly to encourage Research &
Development activities.
The college has a Placement and Training cell and every year a good number
of student benefits in securing employment in reputed organizations.
In addition to NCC and NSS units, there are also technical clubs, a few
student wings of professional bodies like the student chapter of IEEE and CSI.
